Different flavor mojitos

Mojito’s are the perfect drink to relax with after a long hard day.  Actually, mojitos are good just about anytime.  They are easy to prepare and there are so many different ways to add flavor to your Mojito.  If fact, we are going to see 30 different ways to make a Mojito.  But, before we go into the many different flavors you can create when preparing mojito’s let’s talk about the history of this drink.  There are a couple of theories on the origin of the Mojito.  One comes from the 1500s and the other from the 19th century.

History

The Mojito was born in Havana, Cuba sometime around 1586.  The exact origin of the drink is up for debate.  Some believe it originates from a similar drink called the”El Draque”, after Sir Francis Drake.

After his raid on the city of Cartagena de Indias in 1586, his ships sailed toward Havana.  An epidemic of dysentery and scurvy on the ship forced a small party of men to go ashore in Cuba and seek out remedies from the South American Indians on the Island.  The men returned with ingredients to prepare an effective medicine for the sick men aboard the ship.

The ingredients included aguardiente de Cana (translated as burning water, a crude form of rum made from sugarcane), lime, sugarcane juice, and mint.  The lime juice on its own would have helped with the illnesses although the other ingredients helped to flavor the drink and help hide the harsh taste of the rum.

On the other hand, some historians believe that the African slaves that worked in the Cuban sugarcane fields drank Guarapo (the sugarcane juice often used in Mojitos) thus creating their version of the mojito.  So, whichever theory you want to believe go ahead, we say we’re just glad it’s here.

Name

There are several theories behind the origin or the name Mojito.  One theory is that the name relates to mojo, a Cuban seasoning made from lime and used to flavor dishes.

Another theory is that the name is simply a derivative of mojadito (Spanish for “a little wet”), or mojado (wet).

Mojitos popularity

In the mid-1800s the Bacardi Company used the mojito to show how versatile their rum was causing the mojito to soar in popularity.  The drink had quite a celebrity fan base, including Earnest Hemmingway who discovered the mojito in a bar called the La Bodeguita del Medio located in Cuba.  He signed his name with the phrase “My mojito in La Doseguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita” on the wall of the bar.

His signature is still on the wall although it has been doubted by Hemmingway biographers as to its authenticity.  The bar is still operating today.

Market research has found that the mojito is one of the more popular rum-based highballs served in restaurants and bars.  So when you order this drink do you wonder how it’s made?  Well now that we know a bit about the history of the Mojito lets move on to preparing a mojito.

Preparing a Mojito

The basic mojito is a cocktail consisting of white rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime juice, soda water, and mint.  You can add any fruit or vegetable to the drink that you like.

When preparing a mojito, fresh lime juice is added to sugar (or simple syrup) and mint leaves.  The mixture is then gently mashed with a muddler.  The mint leaves should only be bruised to release the essential oils and should not be shredded. Then the rum is added and the mixture is briefly stirred to dissolve the sugar and to lift the mint leaves up from the bottom for better presentation.  Then you add crushed ice and soda water. Garnish with mint leaves and lime wedges.

Of course, each different flavor Mojito will have its own recipe you can follow.  So, now let’s get into the recipes.

But, before we get into the recipes let’s see some more muddlers to choose from and check out a kit with the shaker and muddler and other accessories.
